As announced on June 7, 2018, Tamedia will continue to operate the western Swiss tabloid Le Matin as a purely digital media brand. The media group has examined the proposals of the employee representatives submitted during the consultation phase in order to reduce the impact on jobs. However, an analysis of the variants outlined showed that all variants had already been considered in previous years. In recent years, the various editors of Le Matin examined and implemented a variety of different ideas and measures to enable the further development of the printed newspaper.

Sale is not up for discussion

A sale of Le Matin is not up for discussion at Tamedia. As a digital media brand, Le Matin is to retain its unique positioning in French-speaking Switzerland with its own editorial team. This strategy builds on the already high online reach, the advertising platforms developed, cooperation with the Newsexpress and Sport-Center network, and a collaboration with 20minutes.ch .

Further development to reduce losses

The further development of Le Matin should make it possible to reduce the high losses of 34 million Swiss francs over the last ten years and to build up a longer-term perspective for Le Matin. Le Matin is to be continuously developed in the future and respond to constantly changing usage habits with innovative solutions. The discontinuation of the printed newspaper will result in 36 layoffs, 22 of them in the editorial department, as well as 4 reductions in working hours. Tamedia is calling on employee representatives and Impressum to begin negotiating a social plan within the framework of the current collective employment agreement as of tomorrow, Thursday, June 28, 2018.
