Animal rights activists call for boycott of the day of the break milk

Animal welfare organizations have called for a boycott of Thursday's break milk day at Swiss schools. This is organized every year by Swissmilk and is intended to draw attention to milk as a "healthy snack".

Over it the Tierschützer are indignant: Because which is made with cows and calves in the milk industry, nothing for child eyes is, wrote the three organizations Animal Rights Switzerland, animal in the focus and the Vegane society Switzerland in a message on Wednesday.

Mother and calf would be separated immediately after birth and the calf would be slaughtered afterwards in most cases. This grim reality is not material for the first grade. That is why it is paradoxical to "bombard" children with advertising for an industry that at the same time has to be hidden from them.

And it is precisely this lobby advertising that later leads to an uncritical and distorted image of the dairy industry. Moreover, advertising by a lobby organization such as Swissmilk, the Association of Swiss Milk Producers, has no place in schools, "especially not with the support of the state.

The animal rights organization Peta also demands the cessation of the milk campaign: "In view of the pandemic risks posed by the animal-exploiting industry, the climate catastrophe and the immense animal suffering, it is high time to stop beating the advertising drum for the breast milk of another species and the myth of the happy cow," it said in a statement.

Instead, officials are to educate students about animal- and environmentally-friendly alternatives and hand out plant-based drinks. Swissmilk says it is distributing a portion of milk to more than 325,000 schoolchildren and teachers throughout Switzerland on Break Milk Day on November 4 - "as a healthy alternative to sweet drinks and snacks."
