Presenter Nina Roost turns 90 in a week in Age Man suit

Although we are getting older and older, aging remains a taboo subject. To counteract this, Radio 24 is devoting a week to the topic of "old age" between November 12 and 16 in cooperation with the Zurich Health Department.

During the theme week, Nina Roost lives in the Herzogenmühle retirement center in Schwamendingen (ZH) and ventures into the age-simulating Age-Man suit.

Society does not like to talk about aging: Declining mental and physical strength and death are still taboo subjects. But old age also has its good sides: more time, wisdom and serenity, which the younger generation often lacks. In a theme week, Radio 24 will therefore devote a week entirely to the topic of "old age". The radio team wants to depict aging with all its facets and show that old age is anything but a sad stage of life. Radio 24 provides insights into the everyday life of the older generation, addresses socio-political problems and answers burning questions from listeners.

But what does old age feel like? The morning show host Nina Roost dares to try it out for herself: During the entire theme week, she lives as a fellow resident in the Herzogenmühle retirement home in Schwamendingen. She experiences what it means to live in an old people's center, talks to residents about fears, worries and hopes, and wears an age-man suit herself that simulates aging: From impaired hearing to aching joints to trembling hands, Roost experiences everything that comes with old age. During her stay at the retirement center, she gets to know the fellow residents and their daily routines. Nina Roost records her experiences in an online video diary. She says: "We'll all be old at some point - and as part of this theme week, I'd like to show that living in a retirement center doesn't mean you're on the sidelines now."

The Radio 24 team also illuminates other taboo areas of old age with reports, interviews and features. What does poverty in old age mean in concrete terms? Is robotics the solution to the lack of nursing staff? And what makes Switzerland a special case when it comes to euthanasia? To answer these questions, Radio 24 talks to experts, such as Dignitas founder Ludwig A. Minelli, as well as important decision-makers, such as Zurich's head of health Andreas Hauri.
