The new explanatory video of the Swiss Media Association (VSM) shows in an easy-to-understand way how indirect press promotion works and what its advantages are. The video was produced by students.

Indirect press promotion helps to safeguard the diversity of small and regional daily newspapers, weeklies and magazines and thus makes an important contribution to sound opinion-forming in Switzerland, according to the VSM's press release. It also supports the membership and foundation press. This promotes social cohesion.

In contrast to the model of direct media subsidies - such as the SRG fee system - indirect press subsidies do not jeopardize the independence of the media houses, the association writes in a statement. Moreover, this system causes very little administrative effort. Furthermore, the indirect press subsidy also represents a corrective for the delivery costs of Swiss Post, which are excessive due to the monopoly position of Swiss Post.

Indirect press subsidies are effective - recent years have shown that most of the titles benefiting from them have been able to hold their own successfully in the market.

The printed press is still the most important media genre for forming opinions before votes in Switzerland, writes the VSM. This is confirmed by the Vox study from spring 2016: 83 percent of the survey participants say that they inform themselves about the pro and con arguments of a voting topic by means of press products. This value is stable; in 1999, it was 85 percent.

The video was created by students of the major course "Branded Motion". Micha Lips, Patricia Rosa Katharina Lussi and Gawin Juri Jodok Steiner are responsible for creation and production.
