Coop acquires internet store Nettoshop

Coop has acquired RS Vertriebs AG, taking Nettoshop, the online store for electrical household appliances, under its wing. In this way, the wholesaler secures the necessary expertise in Internet sales.

According to a statement from SDA, Coop's decision to buy the company is primarily due to its strength in online sales. With its own sales channels for electronic household appliances, Fust and Interdiscount, it would not be able to hold a candle to Nettoshop.

Both major distributors Coop and Migros are struggling with the internet, according to the press release. Migros therefore joined Digitec in 2012 and, together with its founders, set up the online department store Galaxus, which also offers household electronics, among other things. It is therefore active in the segment in which Nettoshop is the strongest player.

Both Coop and Migros have therefore gained a strong position in e-commerce through acquisitions. Only in online food retailing have the two top retail giants been able to assert themselves on their own.

It is unclear whether Coop now intends to expand further with Nettoshop or use its Internet expertise elsewhere within the Group. Coop does not comment publicly on such strategic issues, the Basel-based retailer told SDA.
