Private media to be allowed to take over SRG contributions

The National Council wants to allow private Swiss media to take over SRG broadcasts. The latter should also have to offer short versions and individual original sounds. The Telecommunications Committee of the Council of States (KVF) agrees.

However, it does not want to oblige SRG to acquire the copyrights and rights of use necessary for transfer. The commission therefore proposes to amend a motion from the National Council. The demand originates from the sister commission. The latter wants to prevent individual providers from being favored through cooperation with SRG.

The Council of States committee also wants to amend another motion. This is intended to abolish the rule according to which a broadcaster can hold a maximum of two television licenses and two radio licenses. The KVF agrees with this.

However, it did not agree to the demand to simultaneously enlarge the journalistic coverage areas. This would lead to a reduction in the number of territories, which is delicate for federalist reasons, or to undesirable overlaps between the territories, according to a statement on Wednesday. (SDA)
