Over 4 billion Swiss francs lie unused

In collaboration with the Link Institute for Market and Social Research, Tutti.ch conducted a representative survey on the topic of secondhand.

tutti-ch-studie

Tutti.ch conducted a representative survey of the German and French-speaking Swiss population on their second-hand consumption. 60 percent estimate the value of their unused items between 100 and 1,000 francs. 3 out of 4 Swiss have already bought or sold a used item on the Internet at least once. Online platforms or apps are used more frequently than second-hand stores or flea markets. More than 500 people from German-speaking and French-speaking Switzerland were surveyed on the use of second-hand offers by means of an online questionnaire in September 2016.

1,168 francs potential on average per household

More than half of those surveyed estimate the value of their belongings that are lying around unused in their homes and could be sold at between 100 and 1,000 francs. Extrapolated to all Swiss households, this results in a volume of 4.2 billion francs lying dormant in Swiss basements and attics. According to the survey, people aged 60 and over rate the value of their belongings higher than younger people aged between 15 and 29. Men also see a higher resale value in their unused items and are more active than women in buying and selling secondhand items via online portals.

3 out of 4 Swiss use the Internet

Tutti.ch wanted to know from the survey participants whether they have ever used an online platform or app to buy or sell used items. The vast majority of Swiss people answered in the affirmative. Those aged 30 to 44 have the most experience with online second-hand. According to the study, used items are most frequently bought from friends or resold to friends. Online platforms or apps come in second place, ahead of second-hand stores, flea markets or classified ads in magazines or supermarkets.

Swiss attach importance to sustainability

Online platforms or apps for used items are useful because you can pass on something to someone that they can still use: 94 percent agree with this statement. Other advantages, according to the tutti.ch survey, are processing from home and the point of still being able to get some money for used items. According to the study participants, low prices or bargains are less important arguments for buying or selling a used item on the Internet.
