NZZ increases number of digital subscriptions by almost 50 percent

Over 16600 people have subscribed to a digital edition of the Neue Zürcher Zeitung or NZZ am Sonntag. This represents an increase of around 48 percent compared to the previous year.

In contrast to many other publishers, the NZZ relies on a cross-channel model for its subscriptions. Whether print, e-paper (Replica) or on NZZ.ch: readers decide for themselves on which channel and with which device they want to read NZZ content. The success of this overall strategy is confirmed by the circulation certification published today by Wemf. This shows a total of 16634 digital subscriptions sold for the NZZ. Of these, 9710 subscriptions are for the Neue Zürcher Zeitung and 6924 for the NZZ am Sonntag. The NZZ was even able to double its Replica circulation to over 34,000 compared to the previous year.

Thanks to the increase in replica circulation, the Neue Zürcher Zeitung (Swiss edition) was able to compensate for the decline in print: With a total circulation of 114,209, it remained practically stable (-0.9 percent), while the NZZ am Sonntag even managed to increase its circulation by 2.5 percent to 135,805.

"The current circulation figures show once again that our readers are increasingly using digital channels to consume our content. It is therefore important that not only the readers of the printed edition, but also the readers of the digital replicas are recorded by Wemf," explains Steven Neubauer, Head of Marketing & Products NZZ. For Editor-in-Chief Markus Spillmann, the latest results show that "we can not only successfully defend the NZZ's leading position in high-quality journalism in the digital age, but also further expand it".
