SRF: Time-delayed use remains within limits

The time-delayed use of TV programs does not yet play a major role for Swiss Television (SRF). This is shown by the TV usage figures published on Wednesday.

Of the total usage of SRF's TV channels, only 3 percent was consumed via the Internet with a time delay in the first five months of 2013. However, this result was in line with expectations, SRF said in response to a query. It shows that the audience primarily watches fictional content such as "The Undertaker" or "Tatort" after the fact. SRF still registers the largest share of downloads on the day of broadcast until 2 a.m. By contrast, time-delayed use is still relatively unpopular for information programs or formats with a live character, such as ski races or the "Swiss Award.

Thanks to time-delayed utilization again over 30 percent

Although delayed usage has been limited so far, its recording is important for SRF: It helped Swiss TV's stations make it back above the important 30 percent mark.In the first five months of this year, SRF stations brought in a daily market share of 31.1 percent. In the same period last year - still with the old measurement system without time-delayed use - this figure was still 29.2 percent.

Long legal dispute and criticism of the method

Since January 1, 2013, Mediapulse has been measuring TV usage using a new methodology. After criticism of the measurement method and a long legal dispute, the figures for all stations were publicly available for the first time on Wednesday (Werbewoche.ch reported). On the very same day, however, the publication was banned again by the Federal Administrative Court. The private broadcaster 3+ obtained an injunction prohibiting further publication with immediate effect. (SDA)
