Three times more calls via Swisscom mobile network - calls interrupted

On Monday, some Swisscom customers had their calls via landline or cell phones interrupted. The increased work from home has led to an overload of the systems from 9 o'clock. Swisscom is working on a capacity expansion.

Swisscom recorded three times more calls on the mobile network than usual in the morning, as the company announced on request. The volume on the fixed network also increased massively, writes Swisscom. Some private and business customers could therefore no longer make clean calls on fixed or mobile networks. Previously, the news portal Nau.ch had reported on the disruption.

The telecommunications behavior of customers is currently unpredictable. The company writes that employees are currently monitoring the networks much more closely than usual and are taking ongoing measures. However, an occasional overload cannot be ruled out in principle.

Internet data traffic can also come to a standstill - for example, if companies have not equipped their systems for increased access via the Internet. This can lead to bottlenecks in accessing the company's infrastructure.

Swisscom will provide customers with more bandwidth on request if the physical lines are sufficient. However, Swisscom said that priority would clearly be given to customers who provide a central service for the national supply, i.e. who are system-relevant.

Swisscom currently assumes that there is still sufficient capacity in the data network infrastructure despite the increase in home offices. Home office work does not require as many resources as, for example, streaming TV or Netflix, but only a "small proportion of the total traffic". Last week, data traffic was in the low single-digit percentage range of the total network load. (SDA)
