Lake Maggiore gets a nautical app in six languages

A new app is designed to delight sailors and motor boaters on Lake Maggiore. Among other things, it offers a function for locating boating friends on the lake. The skipper app is offered in six languages, including Dutch and Russian - and its content was recorded on site with great effort.

The Grisons-based communications agency Skipp Communications is behind the new mobile app. As the company name suggests, the skippers are quite nautically oriented, working for the vacation region of Ascona-Locarno, among others, but also for the Krüger shipyard on Lake Constance.

Skipp founder FiFi Frei criticized some time ago that the existing apps were inaccurate and the imported content was completely outdated. Without further ado, he and his Skipp crew decided to develop their own app for Android and iOS. After 18 months of development and acquisition, the result is now available for download in the Appstore.

From the gas station to the anchorage

"The app is fantastically helpful when I want to head for my friends on Lake Maggiore. I can see on my smartphone where my friends are and at what speed and in what direction they are traveling. Of course, every app user can activate or deactivate this function themselves," confirms Frei.

Furthermore, the app offers a real-time compass, exact coordinate information and emergency call functions for the Swiss and Italian parts of Lake Maggiore.

However, the main content is a hand-entered point-of-interest list for gas stations, anchorages, moorings, restaurants and shipyards. Each entry is accompanied by a photo with a view from the lake, coordinates and detail entries. For example, for a mooring, the time at which it is allowed to moor, how much it costs to moor, and whether there is anything special, such as a current or missing cleats on the jetty, that needs to be taken into account.

The app is free of charge (iOS and Android) and is intended to appeal to motor boaters and sailors alike. Another feature of the app is that you can record your own route and get valuable information about speeds. This information can be viewed or shared via Facebook.
