The connected car of the future: Volvo enters into partnership with Google
Volvo is entering into a close partnership with the US technology group Google: The two companies are jointly developing the next generation of the Android operating system, which will then be fully integrated into the vehicle and provide access to numerous apps and services.
The new version with enhanced functions is to be used in new Volvo models within the next two years. Google and the Swedish car manufacturer want to revolutionize communication between driver and vehicle. "By partnering with Google, we are taking an important strategic step. Google's platform and services will significantly improve the user experience through additional personalization options. At the same time, Android offers greater flexibility for developers," explains Henrik Green, Senior Vice President Research & Development at Volvo Car Group.
The collaboration between Volvo and Google reflects the convergence between automotive and technology companies resulting from the ever-increasing connectivity of vehicles. According to the Swedish premium manufacturer, the future of the automotive industry lies in intelligent partnerships. Android as the underlying operating system will improve speed and flexibility in development and allow customers to personalize their driving experience.
"We are excited to partner with Volvo to bring our Android system to the next generation of connected cars," said Patrick Brady, vice president of Android engineering at Google. "We will provide Volvo drivers with a nearly seamless experience - through a fully integrated infotainment platform and a rich offering of Android apps and Google services."
"With the introduction of the new Android system, we will have a comprehensive foundation while maintaining our familiar Volvo user interface. In addition, we will offer hundreds of popular apps and the best integrated experience in this broad, connected environment," Green said.
Volvo is also working with Google in another area: Google Local Search will be integrated into existing Volvo models. This expansion will take place as part of an update to the Sensus navigation system.
