Air pollution is a serious problem in African cities. Vehicle exhaust gases are largely responsible for the harmful particulate matter in the air. Although there are far fewer cars on the road in Africa than in Europe, pollutant emissions are much higher. The reason is the toxic fuels. Swiss commodity traders control the dirty business with this fuel.

Return To Sender: dirty air back to the originator.

With "Return To Sender" Public Eye reacts to the grievances. Together with its African partner organizations, Public Eye is sending a container of dirty air to the self-proclaimed industry leader Trafigura at its headquarters in Geneva. During the journey of the container, at least 20,000 signatures are to be collected, which will be handed over to the commodity trader at the end of the trip.

The campaign kicks off with a teaser film that was realized together with partners in Accra, Ghana. In the film, the urban population can be seen collecting dirty air, filling it into canisters and shipping it to the container.

The campaign hub was the website Dirtydiesel.ch designed. Here, the dirty fuel business is dramatized with info-graphics. African representatives of aid organizations and research institutions have their say.

In the second phase of the campaign, the container of dirty air will be shipped to Accra and can be followed live on its journey thanks to real-time weather data and web GL. Various social media activities are also planned. Public Eye is mobilizing its regional groups to collect signatures on the streets as well.
