Advertising market starts with minus in January

The advertising month of January 2015 started with a minus of 1.9 percent compared to the same month of the previous year. Thus, advertising print of 322.8 million gross Swiss francs was measured at the beginning of the year.

14 of the 23 sectors were more restrained in their advertising print spending than in the previous year. However, the retail trade (33.5 million, +54.7 percent), leisure, catering and tourism (32.9 million, +28.1 percent), pharmaceuticals and healthcare (22 million, +18.0 percent) and finance (18.3 million, +27.6 percent) sectors have stepped up their advertising efforts.

Tourism industry increases advertising pressure

The leisure, hospitality, tourism sector invested 32.9 million Swiss francs in advertising at the start of the year, an increase of a proud 28.1 percent on the same month last year. At the forefront in January is the provider Trivago, which is fully focused on the TV medium with its advertising spend (+276 percent compared to the same month last year) and appears to be expanding reach. The pharmaceutical industry advertised a whopping 22 million advertising francs in January, an increase of 18 percent over the same month last year. For medicaments against sore throat, cold, flu, cough, stomach/intestine and cold were invested around 10 million advertising pressure francs. The share for sore throat, cold and flu remedies is around 4.8 million advertising print francs. The most advertised products include the well-known names such as Mebucaine F lozenges, Neo Citran, A.Vogel Echinaforce Resistance tablets, Strepsils Dolo lozenges and Pretuval - everything from prevention to treatment.
