Zurich exhibition on pre-war photography in Switzerland and GermanyUnder the title "Avant-garde - German and Swiss Photography of the 1920s and 1930s", Sotheby's Auction House is hosting an exhibition in Zurich. Around 60 works will be presented, including works by Hans Finsler, who taught the photography class at the Zurich School of Applied Arts in the 1940s and trained some of the most famous contemporary photographers, as well as other exhibits from public and private collections by Jakob Tuggener, Herbert Matter, Franz Roh, August Sander, Albert Renger-Patzsch and Anton Stankowski. The latter's work "Was ist wenn - Fotovarianten mit einer Schneiderbürste" (What if - photo variations with a tailor's brush), which is being exhibited in Switzerland for the first time, is one of the works on display. This is a series of 39 individual works.
With this exhibition, Sotheby's aims to showcase the avant-garde trends in Germany and illustrate their influence on Swiss photography at the time. The exhibition was conceived by curator Birgit Filzmaier. The main sponsors are the bank Lombard Odier & Cie and AXA Nordstern ART Versicherungen.
