Fax: Young & Rubicam to WPP?

British advertising group WPP is apparently on the verge of acquiring Young & Rubicam.Young & Rubicam to WPP? Talks between WPP CEO Martin Sorrell and Y-&-R CEO Tom Bell broke down unsuccessfully in mid-March. According to the London Independent, however, WPP is confident of coming through with its offer of four billion dollars. There are no plans for a hostile takeover; rather, WPP wants to convince Y&R's management to agree to the deal. If the purchase goes through, WPP will overtake U.S. giant Omnicom as the world's largest advertising group to date.
UPC plans German pay TV The Dutch telecom group UPC wants to establish a pay TV platform in Germany within the next twelve months. Several billion deutschmarks will be invested for this purpose, UPC CEO Mark Schneider told the Financial Times Deutschland. Film rights trader and TM3 boss Herbert Kloiber is under discussion as a program supplier.
3Com switches to Lowe Lintas The American computer group 3Com has selected Lowe Lintas & Partners, New York, as its new agency. The other participants in the pitch for the global budget, which was increased by 40 percent to $100 million, were the previous budget holder FCB Worldwide, San Francisco, as well as Ogilvy & Mather and Young & Rubicam, both New York. The Palm Division, which was recently spun off from 3Com, will continue to be managed by FCB.
Consumer advocate attacks US advertisers On Wednesday, the CEOs of the ten largest US agencies received mail from Commercial Alert. The organization, founded by consumer advocate Ralph Nader, believes advertising occupies every waking moment of citizens and literally slays them. In the letter, Commercial Alert asks the agencies whether any area is still sacred to them.
