Federal Council does not want a law against media concentration

The Federal Council does not believe that the concentration in print and online media can be tackled with new laws. It therefore refuses to submit appropriate measures to Parliament.

This is what the Neuchâtel SP National Councilor Jacques-André Maire is demanding in a postulate. Journalism is not a commodity that can be regulated by the market, he writes. Media concentration is already far advanced. There is an urgent need for effective measures to save the last remnants of the diversity of media and opinions. In its response published on Thursday, the Federal Council refers to the Cartel Act. Based on this, the Competition Commission can prohibit a merger if competition could be eliminated due to a dominant market position. Restrictions are in place for licensed radio and television broadcasters to prevent concentration. The Federal Council wants to leave it at that. (SDA)
