Pandemic spurs Internet TV and video usage

Almost 60 percent of TV and video usage in Switzerland now takes place on the Internet. The pandemic has strongly driven this development, especially among users over 30 to 39 years of age (increase from 61 to 69 percent), writes Goldmedia in its "Web Media Monitor 2021".

The research group, which prepared the evaluation on behalf of the Federal Office of Communications Bakom, speaks of almost 200 increasingly frequently used online video offers in the communiqué on Wednesday. Live TV programs and free streaming services are the most popular, with paid services also gaining in popularity with an increase of 33 percent compared to 2019, it said.

And yet, according to the study, 34 percent of the providers surveyed said they had suffered sales losses as a result of the pandemic. Nevertheless, 54 percent of all suppliers are optimistic about the future. Total sales in the industry were around 160 million Swiss francs - and an increase is expected for the current year, the report continues.

The study on online audio and online video offerings in Switzerland is being published for the third time after 2017 and 2019. It is based on a standardized online survey of users and all providers and a qualitative survey of experts from associations and marketing. (SDA)
