Printed newspaper still read more often than web offer

Readers in Switzerland continue to turn the pages of newspapers more often than they surf their newspaper's web portal. While regional newspapers gained print readers slightly, many traditional newspapers suffered a decline.

Two thirds of newspaper readers in Switzerland read their newspaper in paper form and one third via the web. This is shown by the Total Audience-The results of the survey (regular readers of press titles and websites) conducted by the AG für Werbemedienforschung Wemf. The results were published on Tuesday. Only View and the French-speaking Swiss business magazine Bilan have more online users.

In the print sector, regional newspapers were able to gain readers to a lesser extent than in the survey six months ago: The Lucerne Newspaper increased its readership by 5000 and now has 292,000 daily print readers. The St. Galler Tagblatt reached 278,000 readers. That was 2000 more than in the fall. The western Swiss daily newspaper Le Temps even counted 9,000 new print readers and now has a regular readership of 112,000.

The printed editions of the traditional newspapers Tages-Anzeiger and New Zurich Newspaper on the other hand, lost ground. They lost 37,000 and 13,000 readers respectively and now have a readership of 380,000 and 239,000. The SonntagsBlick with minus 19'000 to 564'000, Le Matin with minus 16,000 to 218,000 and 24 Heures with minus 14,000 to 162,000.

The New Zurich Newspaper and the Tribune de Genève managed to compensate for the decline in print readership with an increase in online readership. In addition to these two titles 20 minutes (+22,000 to 1.3 million) in the network. The Lucerne Newspaper gained 10,000 readers to 67,000.

The View on the other hand, lost 50,000 readers online, but still reaches 697,000 readers online. The Tages-Anzeiger (-20,000) and Le Matin (-12,000) also lost readership online.

20 Minuten has the most readers

Across the board - print and online - readership figures have remained stable compared to six months ago. The print and online offerings therefore appear to have leveled off.

Switzerland's most widely read publications continue to be 20 minutes. The free newspaper reaches 3.2 million people a day in German-speaking Switzerland, French-speaking Switzerland and Ticino, with a slight decrease of 3,000 readers. Almost 1.9 million via the printed edition and 1.3 million via the website.

Double readers, i.e. people who regularly use both the print edition and the online offering, are recorded twice in total. According to Wemf, this represents an average of just six percent of the respective brand reach.

In second place comes the View with 1.1 million daily readers throughout Switzerland, with 697,000 people reading the content on Blick.ch, while 477,000 prefer the printed edition.

Tages-Anzeiger ahead despite loss

In the case of the major traditional newspapers, the Tages-Anzeiger despite the large loss of 57,000 readers in total, with a readership of 608,000. The New Zurich Newspaper was able to marginally increase its total readership from 413,000 to 414,000 thanks to the online gains. It now has 239,000 readers of the printed newspaper and 175,000 readers online.

In the regional newspapers, the AZ Northwestern Switzerland has the most readers. Its total reach is 458,000 readers. It is followed by the Lucerne Newspaper with 359,000 readers. Bernese Newspaper and The Covenant together have 432,000 readers who Basel Newspaper 156’000.

Of the titles reported in French-speaking Switzerland 24 Heures was read the most - by 229,000 people (-23,000). The Tribune Genève read 185,000 people (+3000) and Le Temps 160’000 (+12’000). Le Nouvelliste has remained at 143,000 readers since October 2017. In Ticino, the Corriere del Ticino 103,000 print readers. Online users are not shown.

NZZ on Sunday increases

The SonntagsBlickwhich is the leading Sunday newspaper, reaches 1.9 million people. 564,000 people stated that they regularly read the newspaper at the breakfast table. Internet usage cannot be determined separately, as the Internet portal is combined with other newspapers. View-titles is shared.

The NZZ on Sunday was able to increase the number of regular readers by 56,000 in six months to just over one million readers. The users of the NZZ on Sunday are mixed with the users of the main brand.

The SonntagsZeitung has 558,000 (-23,000) readers. Its digital content can be found in the Tamedia Group's news network.

Of the magazines, the NZZ Folio as well as the Observer a large regular readership. For the former, Wemf reports 1.6 million readers, for the latter Observer 1.4 million. The business magazine Balance has 288,000 readers and its French-speaking Swiss counterpart Bilan 163’000. (SDA/hae)
