ZDF wants German-language media library network

ZDF Director-General Norbert Himmler has spoken out in favor of cross-border cooperation between German-language TV media libraries. The goal, he said, is a German-language European network together with Austria and Switzerland.

"My idea is that we will have a German-language European network, together with the Swiss and Austrians. We are already on the way there, if you look at the integration of Arte and 3sat in the ZDF-Mediathek, for example," Himmler told Deutsche Presse-Agentur DPA.

"The concept of the joint streaming network is that there are offers from the entire public spectrum in the media libraries, however. That's the big advantage for the audience," says the ZDF director.

In Germany, closer cooperation between public broadcasters on media libraries has been increasingly discussed in recent months. In a recent speech, the director of ARD's largest broadcaster, Westdeutscher Rundfunk WDR, Tom Buhrow, once again brought up the idea he expressed years ago of a single large media library in 2030.

Recently, WDR program director Jörg Schönenborn also spoke out in favor of a large media library with all public broadcasters. So far, ARD and ZDF have been working together in an increasingly networked way, but they still have independent media libraries. (SDA)
