Promoting media literacy is an integral part of Curriculum 21, but it is difficult for teachers to assess students' prior knowledge and get started with the subject. An online test is intended to help them with this.

98 percent of 12- to 19-year-olds in Switzerland have a smartphone. However, they often use the possibilities available to them without the necessary know-how and critical reflection. This writes Pro Juventute in a statement on Thursday.

However, dealing with the Internet, cell phones and social media is an integral part of Curriculum 21, which will be gradually introduced in 21 German- and multilingual Swiss cantons starting in the coming school year.

For this important step, the youth organization is now offering schools a free web-based placement test for grades 3 to 8. It measures students' media knowledge and suggests lesson content and teaching materials to teachers based on this.

The test will be available from November 3 in German and from spring 2017 in French and Italian at Media professionals-test.ch available. It was developed by the Schwyz University of Education on behalf of Pro Juventute. The development was financially supported by Google. Google Switzerland and the youth organization Pro Juventute entered into a multi-year partnership in February to promote media literacy among young Swiss people, according to the statement. (SDA)
