DAB+ in road tunnels from the end of 2018

From the end of 2018, radio reception via DAB+ will also be possible in the longer tunnels of Swiss national roads. The Federal Roads Office (Astra) is investing around CHF 30 million in the upgrade.

FM reception remains guaranteed for the time being. Good radio reception in road tunnels not only serves the comfort of travelers, but also represents an important element of road safety, Astra announced on Thursday. This is because it would allow emergency services to keep motorists informed with traffic and safety messages in the event of an incident. By 2024 at the latest, SRG and private radio associations plan to switch off FM transmitters. Upgrading the technology is therefore necessary, the statement added. According to Astra, around 200 tunnels over a length of 300 meters are affected. On shorter stretches, DAB+ reception is already possible, it said. New tunnels and tunnels that are being renovated have already been equipped with the new technology as standard for some time. (SDA)
