Movement in the private radio market

With overall radio consumption in German- and French-speaking Switzerland generally falling slightly, private radio stations managed to wrest a market share of just under one percent from SRG stations. Radio Energy Zürich is now the most listened to private radio station in German-speaking Switzerland.

Twice a year, Mediapulse publishes the official usage figures for Swiss live radio consumption via cable, FM, DAB+ and web radio among the population aged 15 and over living in Switzerland. Compared to the previous semesters, the figures for the second semester of 2015 show relatively constant values. Nevertheless, movements can be observed from this, but their significance (effective significance) must be assessed and put into perspective due to the confidence interval.

Despite slightly declining reach in German-speaking Switzerland (87.1 percent) and Suisse romande (83.1 percent), radio is still one of the most-used media in Switzerland. In Svizzera italiana, radio usage remained relatively constant and high compared to the previous semester at 88.7 percent.

Compared to the SRG stations, which continue to be the most listened to (64.5 percent market share), the private radio stations in German-speaking Switzerland were able to increase their market share by just under one percent and now occupy 31 percent of the market. The picture is similar in French-speaking Switzerland, where the private stations, with a market share of 24.4 percent, have also managed to wrest a market share of just under one percent from the SRG stations, which continue to be strong (66.1 percent market share). The Italian-speaking Swiss are traditionally loyal SRG listeners. Their stations continue to occupy the majority of the radio market with 76.9 percent, but lose a total of 1.3 percent market share to private stations (15.5 percent) and foreign radio stations (7.6 percent).

In German-speaking Switzerland, Radio Energy Zürich is now the most listened-to private radio station, replacing Radio 24 from its decades-long leadership position. However, the measured difference in reach from second-place Radio 24 is not statistically significant. Locally, Radio 24 remains significantly ahead of Radio Energy Zürich in the large-scale Zürich-Glarus license area, while the two stations are virtually on a par in the Zürich license area - with a minimal lead for Radio 24.

Mediapulse measures and markets official radio audience figures in Switzerland. The daily data from the Mediapulse Radiopanel is used by radio stations for program optimization and by the advertising industry for selling advertising spots to specific target groups. Since 2013, the measurement has also recorded the distribution of radio programs via the Internet (web streams). In addition, since 2014 (2nd semester 2014), the synchronous broadcasting of identical audio signals via several radio stations has been additionally plausibility-checked and correctly assigned to the individual programs.

In the compilation of the semester characteristics, for the net range in % (NR%), the size of the measurement-related fluctuation range - the so-called Confidence interval - supplied.

Reading example for the tables:

2nd semester 2015, DS, Radio Total: NR% = 87.1, VI = +/- 0.5. This means: the true value of Radio Total's reach in the DS lies with 95% probability in the range between 86.6% and 87.6%. With regard to the assessment of differences between measured values (e.g. to the previous year's value or to another program), this means that this difference is only statistically significant if it is greater than the half confidence interval specified under "VI".
