NZZ decides on digital pay offer for Austria

The NZZ Media Group will launch a digital journalistic pay service specifically for Austria under the name NZZ.at by 2015 at the latest.

This was decided by the company on the basis of a project study that a team led by the former editor-in-chief of "Presse", Michael Fleischhacker, has been preparing since March of this year. Fleischhacker will also take over as editor-in-chief of NZZ.at, according to a statement on Wednesday.

As of today, interested readers can already follow the creation of NZZ.at follow in a specially created "workshop blog" and participate in the shaping of the product. "This is an invitation to all interested parties to accompany us on this journey with encouragement and criticism, with ideas and references, with seriousness and with humor," explains Michael Fleischhacker.

NZZ.at will be financed on the one hand by user contributions and on the other hand by advertising revenues. The service focuses on liberal and independent quality journalism and will thus close a gap in the Austrian market, according to the statement. Even after the launch, users will have the opportunity for an intensive exchange with the editorial team.

Markus Spillmann, Editor-in-Chief of the "Neue Zürcher Zeitung" and member of the Executive Board of the NZZ Media Group: "In addition to quality journalism, our readers today expect background reporting, analyses and opinions that are prepared in a way that meets the requirements of the digital age. This also includes dialog with the authors. We are convinced that with NZZ.at we will make a contribution to changing the media landscape."

The launch of NZZ.at is part of the new strategy of the NZZ Media Group. Targeted investments in the core business of journalism in Switzerland as well as in other German-speaking countries are intended to attract new customers and tap additional sources of revenue.
