Seven foundations launch European Press Prize

Seven European foundations want to promote good journalism by launching a European Press Prize. The prize will be awarded in all 47 European countries.

The prize is awarded in four categories: Editorial, Commentary, Reportage and Outstanding Innovation. 10,000 euros are available for each category. The Press Prize will be awarded for the first time in 2013, as the seven European foundations announced on Thursday, according to SDA. The initiators are convinced that serious reporting in print products or on newspaper websites strengthens the role of journalism as a defender of democratic freedoms.

The seven foundations are: The Guardian and Thomson Reuters in the UK, Stichting Democratie en Media and Vereniging Veronica in the Netherlands, The Jyllands Posten and The Politiken in Denmark and The Media Development Loan Fund in the Czech Republic.

The submission period for the 2013 call for entries runs from July 1 to October 26, 2012.
