Media Congress: Doris Leuthard raises threatening finger

In Flims, Federal Councillor Doris Leuthard called on publishers and SRG to work together to find a solution by the end of this year. Both sides should not insist on their maximum demands.

Switzerland needs private media houses and a strong SRG, not least in view of foreign competition. The media minister pointed out that the technological environment had changed significantly in recent years. In particular, the Internet and mobile devices posed new challenges for the media. The previously clear boundaries between the offerings of the publishers and the SRG had thus become blurred.

The legislator always lags behind somewhat. The state cannot and does not want to intervene in the development of new technologies. And it is not the job of the authorities to control the consumer behavior of citizens. That is a matter for competition in the media market. The state is trying to create good framework conditions.
