Reporters Without Borders: Situation for Journalists in Libya Threatening

According to the human rights organization Reporters Without Borders (RSF), the Libyan authorities have imposed an information blackout on the North African country.

As in Bahrain and Yemen, the situation is increasingly difficult and threatening for journalists. Internet and telephone lines are being repeatedly interrupted. According to a statement published in Paris, SDA said: "It is now almost impossible for journalists to work; the few foreign correspondents who were already in Libya before the crisis are under extremely close surveillance and their freedom of movement is restricted." Nevertheless, some reporters tried to enter the country by land via the Tunisian border. The Arab TV station Al-Jazeera accused the Libyan secret service of jamming its broadcast signal and website since February 20.

Other Arab TV stations also have similar problems. Since February 18, a local newspaper journalist who had recently spoken to Al-Jazeera about the demonstrations in the city of Benghazi had disappeared. (SDA)
