Advertising effect: City of Bern raises 70,000 francs for Tour de Suisse

The city of Bern wants to continue to score points on the tourist advertising market with spectacular cycling television images. That is why it is supporting the Tour de Suisse stage stop in Bern in mid-June with CHF 70,000.

At a media conference of the local organizing committee on Monday morning, Bern's municipal councilor Reto Nause said, according to the communiqué and the text of the speech, that Bern had made "great strides in terms of positive perception and international recognition". With its hilly topography, the Old Town and the Federal Palace, Bern offers a "unique backdrop" - both for athletes and spectators. Therefore, it was "nothing but logical" that after the Tour de France last year, the Tour de Suisse would also come back to Bern. Switzerland's biggest cycling event belongs in the federal city.

In addition to a contribution of 70,000 francs, the city of Bern will also grant the Tour de Suisse organizers a fee waiver. The cycling event will not have to pay anything, for example, for the use of public land and the erection of safety barriers along the route. This was added by Alice Späh from the City of Berne's Directorate for Safety, Environment and Energy at the request of the organizers. The amount of 70,000 francs is within the competence of the Bernese city government.

Destination in Bern's North Quarter

The Tour-de-Suisse convoy will approach the canton of Bern from Menziken AG on Monday afternoon, June 12. It will first cross the Emmental and then ride via Krauchthal to Stettlen and through the Gümligen valley to Gümligen. It then continues through Ostermundigen on a lap through the center of Bern. More precisely, the racers ride down Muristalden to Bärenpark, then up the old town to Zytglogge and across Bundesplatz further down to Matte. At the end, the steep Aargauerstalden awaits and the final sprint on Papiermühlestrasse in Bern's northern quarter.

While the professionals will reach the finish line at around 5:30 p.m., children and young people will be able to take part in bike skill courses on the Bundesplatz as early as 11 a.m. this Monday morning. Interactive traffic tests are also on the program, as was announced at the media conference. On Tuesday at noon, the riders will start at 1:30 p.m. on Münsterplatz. Neutralized, i.e. not yet in race mode, they will first ride via Waisenhausplatz, Schützenmatte and Neufeld and then on towards Wohlen. The stage finish will be Villars-sur-Ollon VD. Starting at 10 a.m., the 22 start camps of the teams will be set up in the alleys between Zyglogge and Nydeggbrücke. So there will be a racing atmosphere. The last time Bern was the arrival point for the Tour de Suisse was in 2015, when the Tour ended in Bern.

Traffic restrictions planned

Especially in Bern and Ostermundigen, the bike race will cause "certain closures and detours", the organizers said further. Along the route, closures of about 30 minutes must be expected. In addition, a no-stopping zone will be signaled along the route in the city of Bern from 3 p.m. on Monday. On June 12, Papiermühlestrasse will be closed all day in the section between Kasernenstrasse and Guisanplatz. On June 13, Kramgasse, Gerechtigkeitsgasse, Postgasse and Rathausgasse will be closed to traffic in Bern. In addition, Münsterplatz and Herrengasse will be closed off from early morning. (SDA)
