Are printing and paper not good enough?
Whether flyers, invitation cards, menus, brochures or documentation, there are many reasons for print finishing. Surface finishing with coatings or foils makes printed materials appear matte, glossy, or in a matte-gloss combination. "Sealing" the surface with a coating or foil extends the utility value of printed materials. This protects prints from moisture and light. The colors fade less and the paper retains its shape. In addition, the printed image is better protected against abrasion and greasy fingers.
The "wow effect
Finishing is always also a means of design. That's why it's important that the design of a print product doesn't "just" refer to the pure graphics work. In order to achieve the best possible effect, the substrate and the type of finishing must already be defined in the conception phase. The combination of artwork, paper and finishing should create a "wow effect", otherwise the effort is not worthwhile.
Digital printing finishing
The undisputed strength of digital printing lies in the economical production of short to medium runs. A major advantage is printing and personalization in a single pass.Just a few years ago, finishing digital print products had to be done offline, i.e., on another press in a separate production pass. The additional step on another production line increases the risk of waste and errors. Waste can occur and the sequence of personalized preprints can get mixed up.
Inline and ...
With inline finishing, the print product leaves the press fully printed and finished. This saves time and waste. In the event of errors, the complete print product including finishing can be reproduced without any risk of confusion. The possibilities of inline finishing are limited, however. Today, it is possible to apply personalized relief coating and white inline in the press. In order to be able to cover the entire range of finishing possibilities, offline finishing is usually not an option.
... Offline finishing
Of course, digital preprints can be finished offline just like offset preprints. The difficulty lies in matching a personalized preprint with the appropriate personalized finishing. Here, the printed "Mr. Hans Meier" must be brought together with the "Mr. Hans Meier" to be finished with the aid of character codes or camera reading. It is important that the production process is coordinated in the conception phase and defined with all those involved. This is the only way to avoid errors and post-production.
A practice judgment
For Renato Vögeli, Vögeli AG, Marketing Production & Printing, Langnau i. E., it is important to advise customers correctly, to develop solutions that can subsequently be implemented successfully.Digital printing is not just digital printing. There are different digital printing systems such as dry toner, liquid toner and inkjet. The systems place different demands on the substrate, resulting in a surface that can vary depending on the printing process. For example, toner can stick to the paper surface and thus change the adhesion behavior for finishing compared to offset or inkjet printing. In order to be able to offer its customers as wide and high-quality a range as possible, Vögeli AG uses an offline finishing system. The register, i.e. the position of the print on the printed sheet, is not as precise with digital printing as it is with offset printing. This can lead to difficulties during the subsequent offline finishing process if the print image and finishing do not match exactly. Modern finishing systems therefore have integrated camera systems to read in the position of the print and thus position the finishing exactly on the print.Inline finishing offers the advantage, from Renato Vögeli's point of view, that the product is already finished after one work step. This means a time advantage. He cannot see any other advantages in inline coating at the moment. For him, it is more of a hindrance, since one has to limit oneself to the finishing possibilities of the printing and finishing equipment. For Renato Vögeli, the possibilities of inline finishing lag behind offline processing. Although relief coating can be applied inline with the possibility of personalization, in his view the result cannot be compared with the results achieved offline.
May it be a little more?
For Beni Kiser, managing director and owner of Kasimir Meyer AG, it can sometimes be a bit more. When it comes to emphasizing and making visible the value of one's own product, service or a special event, there are almost no limits to creativity with product enhancements in the third dimension. The different haptic and visual impressions appeal to more senses in the recipient, and the advertising message is remembered even better.Kasimir Meyer AG not only has the know-how, but also the modern machinery to significantly enhance the effect of printed products through finishing. Whether following offset printing or digital printing is irrelevant, the main thing is that the effect is right!Effect can be achieved through the selective use of UV coating. And even more so in outstanding quality - in the literal sense - with digital relief coating in various relief heights. This means that nothing stands in the way of a "shiny" appearance that guarantees the attention of the target group - whether for very short or very long runs. For Beni Kiser, the efficiency and speed of inline finishing are among the advantages. There are fewer interfaces in the production process, and production time is shorter. This is also reflected in the costs.
For Beni Kiser, the choice of printing process is not important. What is decisive are the customers' requirements. These determine the technical production process. That's why it's important to advise customers who are procuring high-quality, refined and personalized print products. Consulting expertise often determines whether creative ideas are technically feasible. However, technical feasibility does not mean that it can also be produced economically, which is why it is important for creative and marketing people to look for competent partners. Only the experts have the knowledge of their own technical possibilities, the knowledge of substrates, inks and finishing options, and it is important to make use of this expertise. After all, companies that occupy the niche of high-quality digital print products are usually characterized by a high level of innovation and extensive know-how. It is important to take advantage of this offer in order to effectively distinguish your print products from the mass of publications.
From Renato Vögeli's point of view, digitally printed items are still finished rather less often than offset prints. This is mainly due to the fact that the current possibilities for finishing short runs and personalization are still less well known. Renato Vögeli is working on changing this every day and is focusing the business very strongly on this. In the belief that individuality and short-term production of short runs in high quality will become more and more popular.
