A cleverly designed invitation. A challenge in terms of printing and further processing. Picture: Kasimir Meyer AGFROM SABINE FLACHSMANNToday, most paper qualities can be printed and processed without any problems. Nevertheless, when printing on uncoated and specialty papers in particular, there are a few things to consider to ensure that the result meets the expectations of the print product. The printing of sophisticated images, but also individual finishing techniques, can be more complex than planned and become a real challenge for the print shop, so companies are well advised to involve the printing company in their planning as early as possible and also discuss the choice of paper with their printing partner.Cooperation with paper wholesalersThe Kasimir Meyer AG has good contact with its partners in the paper wholesale trade. "They regularly inform us about trends and new products," says Cyrill Heimgartner, Managing Director, Kasimir Meyer AG. "This is important for us so that we can also provide our customers with the best possible support when choosing paper. Of course, we also advise our customers on the choice of paper for their print products and/or finishing. If required, we can also provide paper samples or create blank samples. We also advise customers on the structure of the images with corresponding profiles. "Many customers choose their own paper. According to Kasimir Meyer's experience, high-quality natural and specialty papers are also used.Observe running direction"In principle, we have no problems processing such uncoated and specialty papers. However, depending on the choice of paper, the substrate must be handled very carefully - for example, in the case of aluminized paper." Depending on the paper quality, more time may be required for drying the ink and further processing. This time window must be discussed and taken into account with the customer during planning and scheduling, and it should also be noted that the paper is not always available in both running directions for specialty papers. "However, the running direction is an important factor for further processing in order to achieve optimum quality," explains Heimgartner. The consequence is that less benefit can be cut out of a larger sheet and the rest of the expensive paper has to be destroyed. This causes costs that could be avoided.Involvement in the planning phaseIf finishes, special papers or unusual designs are planned for a print job, Heimgartner recommends contacting the print partner during the planning phase. "This is the only way we can contribute our expertise and contribute to a perfect printed item. This is always in the interests of the customer. "In practice, Heimgartner has noticed that uncoated papers are increasingly being used again. However, the finishing options for uncoated papers are very limited. In such cases, screen printing is increasingly being used. However, Heimgartner cannot identify a clear trend.Additional image processing for special papers"The vast majority of customers already come to us with specific paper requirements. Sihldruck", says Andreas Hostettler, Head of Marketing + Sales and member of the Executive Board. "Together with the customer, we check whether the chosen product is suitable in terms of image reproduction, printing and further processing. Depending on the complexity, we also work with blank samples. "Hostettler is convinced that the variety of papers that can be used for corporate publishing products is an enrichment for creative departments. However, it is sometimes forgotten during production that many of these papers also require special image processing. "If this aspect is not taken into account, the print result can deviate considerably from the desired result," he says, adding that drying behavior and suitability for further processing must also be taken into account from the outset in order to meet the specified schedule.Trend towards matt-coated papersThe recommendation to customers is therefore to seek contact with the print service provider as early as the planning phase. Only an early, joint exchange of information can prevent the first-time use of special papers from leading to disappointment, annoyance and additional time and costs." When asked about the trends in paper selection, Hostettler explains that these are strongly oriented towards general fashion trends "We are currently seeing a shift from uncoated papers with a pronounced feel back to matt-coated papers." Hostettler believes that one of the reasons for this development is the customer's desire for the best possible image reproduction.
