Iart wins a Golden Lion in the Design category

The success story of Iart's light frieze continues: at Cannes Lions, the work for the Kunstmuseum Basel wins the first Swiss Gold Lion since 2015.

On Wednesday evening, the Product Design, Design, Media, Entertainment and Entertainment for Music categories were awarded in Cannes. Switzerland sent several hot irons into the race with Iart and Jung von Matt/Limmat.

A top contender for a Design Lion had made the list of finalists on Tuesday with Iart and the Light Frieze. The work, commissioned by the Department of Construction and Transport of the Canton of Basel, recently won a sensational Gold at The One Show in New York and has also previously won Gold and Silver at the Swiss ADC Awards and the prestigious D&AD Awards (Werbewoche.ch reported).

The high expectations were met: Iart is also ennobled with the top gold award at the so-called "World Championships of Advertisers", the Cannes Lions. "We are very happy about the award together with our partners Christ & Gantenbein - the architects of the extension of the Kunstmuseum Basel - and Ludovic Balland, who designed the typeface," CEO Valentin Spiess told Advertising Week on Wednesday evening. "The now total of 13 prizes for the light frieze show that our activities in the field of media architecture are trend-setting for the future of building."

"Our media architecture activities are leading the way."

Incidentally, Iart is not a Cannes newcomer: the Basel-based firm, founded in 2001, already won a Cannes award in 2014 with the kinetic façade of the MegaFaces pavilions of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi won the Innovation Grand Prix. With the Design Lion, however, an award from the main Cannes Lions competition is now coming to Basel for the first time, adding to the already bulging Trophy cabinet by Iart for what is probably the most prestigious creative award to date.

This is the first Swiss gold since Saatchi & Saatchi's Vangardist flyer 2015 - and even the first German-Swiss full success since the Turning sets by Leo Burnett in 2013.

The evening was less pleasing for Jung von Matt/Limmat: Although the starting position was promising with shortlist placements in the categories Design (once) and Media (three times) - all with the "Sound Book App" for Nordsüd Verlag - it remains for the time being with the Bronze Lion in the category Mobile awarded on Tuesday.
