The videos produced by Frame Engine provide practical, real-life advice to affected children and young people, their families and the wider community.

In Switzerland, an estimated 3,000 children and adolescents live with the autoimmune disease diabetes type 1. This diagnosis poses major challenges for the everyday life of the entire family. The basis for successful management of diabetes is comprehensive knowledge, both on the part of those affected and those around them. The need for reliable, well-founded information is very great in this situation.

Living with diabetes: a new start

The diagnosis of type 1 diabetes means fundamental changes and major challenges for the everyday life of those affected and their families. For successful management of type 1 diabetes without restriction, the knowledge of those affected and their environment plays a decisive role. In this situation, immediately available, reliable, scientifically supported and practical information is important. This is where the videos offered by the pediatric diabetology team come in: As a university hospital, Inselspital cares for one of the largest groups of children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes in Switzerland. The high level of medical expertise combined with the knowledge gained from many years of counseling and care that has gone into the videos make them an excellent tool for children and adolescents, for their families, and for the wider social environment.

Five videos with answers to important questions
The videos speak at eye level with those affected and their families, thereby promoting safety in everyday life and self-confidence. Sometimes complex content is conveyed in an understandable way. The videos offer important information to people in the environment, such as grandparents, teachers, babysitters and contacts in sports associations. Fear of contact is reduced, a positive attitude is promoted and confidence and motivation for a life with type 1 diabetes without restrictions are strengthened.

Two animated videos "What is diabetes?" and "How do you treat type 1 diabetes?" are available, as well as three video clips in which children with type 1 diabetes answer three typical questions: "How do you measure your blood glucose?", "How do you inject insulin?" and "How do we act in an emergency in case of hypoglycemia with unconsciousness?".

The video project was supported by the Batzebär Foundation, which will be called Stiftung Kinderinsel from 2022, and by companies from the diabetes sector. It was directed by Christoph Saner, MD, PhD, senior physician at the University Department of Pediatrics at Inselspital. The entire pediatric diabetology team contributed. The result is a set of contemporary, educational media formats for children and adolescents who want to learn about the basics of type 1 diabetes from a reliable source.
