We know it, but we love it even more. The carrot cake is nationally known. It originated in the canton of Aargau, which is also known as Rüebliland. If you want to try a typical Aargau carrot cake, go to the Bäckerei-Konditorei Eberhard. www.beck-eberhard.ch
Appenzell
The advertisements with the three alpine dairymen have given Appenzell cheese even more charm, and the Appenzell beaver is just as well known. But a true specialty from the region is the "genie from Appenzell", Alpenbitter - an alcoholic drink made with herbs that tastes somewhat bitter. It was first produced in 1887 by the Interlaken pharmacist August F. Dennler The production site can be visited. www.appenzeller.com
Basel
The first thing one associates with Basel is the Läckerli. But another specialty is a pastry that is eaten mainly at Christmas time. Known as "the sweet Basel", the Brunsli found its beginning in 1908. It is made from almonds, hazelnuts, tree nuts and chocolate.
Bern
The list of specialties for Bern is long. For one, there is the Emmental cheese or the Gruyère. But what really only exists in Bern is the onion market, which always takes place around Christmas time. At the "Zibelemärit", of course, the typical Zibelekuchen cannot be missing. This, by the way, contains the two types of cheese mentioned. And who likes, receives the "Wähe" also with bacon.
