Facebook has promptly signed deals with Australian media companies following the introduction of a controversial media law. The world's largest social network announced the deals with Private Media, Schwartz Media and Solstice Media on Friday.

"Following these agreements, there will now be a range of premium journalism content, including previously paid-for content, on Facebook," it added. The Australian parliament had passed a law on Thursday requiring online platforms to share their news-generated advertising revenue with media outlets. Facebook had resisted the law (Werbewoche.ch reported).

Australia is the first nation to pass a law of this kind. Around the globe, however, governments have been looking for years for ways to curb the influence of the US technology giants. Several countries have now declared they will take steps following Australia's example. (SDA)
