Swiss millennials think social media is harmful

According to a study, Swiss millennials are particularly critical of social media. Nevertheless, they do not delete their accounts.

The SonntagsZeitung published in a survey of Swiss millennials aged between 24 and 35 shows that this age group takes a critical view of online networks. The study was conducted by the consulting firm Deloitte. Globally, 13,000 people took part, in Switzerland 319.

According to the survey, Swiss respondents are more convinced that social media causes more harm than good compared to other countries. 60 percent agreed with this statement, compared to 55 percent worldwide. Almost half of Swiss millennials actually no longer want to use social media at all, compared to "only" 41% worldwide.

Fear of missing out

However, anyone who assumes that this negative attitude leads people to turn away from social media is mistaken. Nevertheless, respondents do not delete their accounts for fear of missing out. Although 61 percent of millennials believe that they would be happier without social media.

The survey also confirms the assumption that Facebook and co. do not enjoy a good reputation. Trust in the companies behind the networks is low. 76 percent of millennials are concerned about how companies handle their data. 58% are of the opinion that the internet giants should do more for data protection, 56% even call for tougher action by the state.
