Twitter gains users and is in the red

After a long period of sluggish growth, Twitter has once again gained significantly more users. Nine million monthly active users were added in the past quarter.

In the previous quarter, despite all the attention paid to U.S. President Donald Trump's election campaign tweets, the figure was only two million. Twitter now has 328 million monthly active users, as the short message service announced on Wednesday. In terms of finances, however, the dry spell continues. Revenue fell in the first quarter by eight percent year-on-year to 548 million dollars. The decisive factor was the decline in advertising revenue by eleven percent to 474 million dollars. Twitter tries to bring in the money mainly with ads such as Twitter messages paid for by companies in users' timelines. The company also remained in the red - but managed to cut its loss by about a quarter, to $62 million. Twitter's stock, which has been weakening for a long time, temporarily jumped by a good eight percent in pre-market trading because the figures exceeded analysts' expectations. (SDA)
