Only two Federal Councillors tweet personally: Schneider-Ammann and Berset

The Federal Council is far more reserved in its use of Twitter than other governments or even US President Donald Trump. Only Interior Minister Alain Berset and Economy Minister Johann Schneider-Ammann have their own Twitter account.

Berset personally writes all of his tweets, a spokesman for the Federal Department of Home Affairs (FDHA) told news agency SDA in response to an inquiry. Berset's account is deliberately a one-way channel, he said: He tweets, but does not reply to other tweets.

Schneider-Ammann's Twitter account is managed by his communications team, according to the website of his Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research (EAER). Occasionally, the economics minister also tweets personal messages; he signs these with his initials "JSA".

The remaining members of the Federal Council do not have their own Twitter accounts. However, they are present on Twitter via the accounts of their departments. For example, the Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications (DETEC) regularly posts tweets from its head, President Doris Leuthard. Foreign Minister Didier Burkhalter is rather quiet on Twitter. The Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) does tweet frequently about its travel advice, but otherwise its communication via the short message service is sparse.

The Federal Council spokesman André Simonazzi, on the other hand, is a diligent twitterer: he regularly tweets in three national languages about current government decisions or statements made by the Federal Councilors. (SDA)
