Kickbag declares war on packaging waste

Who wants to dispose of packaging waste after Christmas? The reusable kickbag made of recycled PET saves many tons of waste and CO2. The packaging solution from St.Gallen wants to give a boost to the Swiss circular economy.

The Kickbag is a reusable, flexible bag made of recycled PET with Velcro closure. The robust, weatherproof and durable Kickbag can be used instead of disposable packaging for shipping almost any product. For flexible and reliable shipping and return, the foldable Kickbag uses both the parcel and letter channels.

"When we developed the Kickbag in the summer of 2020 for our online stores Stadtlandkind.ch and Stoff&so, we quickly recognized its enormous potential," says Tobias Zingg, co-founder of Kickbag.

Enabler for new circular models

"Shipping used to be a sticking point in an ecological value chain," says Zingg. The Kickbag, he says, is the solution for logistics that does not require disposable packaging - entirely in the spirit of the circular economy. The reusable bag made of recycled PET works in classic e-commerce, but is also interesting for companies that rely on recycling, reuse, rental and sharing models. The bag could even collect goods on its way back from the consumer to the retailer, for example batteries or old clothes. This opens up ideas for new business models.

The St.Gallen-based start-up can look back on intensive months with launch customers such as PKZ, Walder Schuhe, Coop Bau+Hobby and the Swiss Army. In the spring and summer of 2021, more than 12,000 Kickbag shipments have already been sent out. "An important success factor was that, together with Swiss Post, we were able to clear all the hurdles in order to transport the Kickbag smoothly," explains Zingg.

Customers want sustainable shipping solutions

A recent study by Swiss Post shows how much action is needed in the mail order business. Consumers want sustainable, climate-neutral shipping solutions. But online retailers are lagging behind with their offerings. "Today, customers don't just choose the product, but a total package. If you don't produce unnecessary waste during shipping, you score points with environmentally conscious customers," explains Tobias Zingg. The Kickbag has the potential to make a major contribution to a sustainable future and to combating climate change.
