YouTube will soon become an e-commerce platform

YouTube users will be able to store directly on the video platform in the future. Influencers are to tag the products that appear in their content.

Tagging allows content to be linked to e-commerce tools from YouTube parent company Google. For example, viewers of "unboxing videos" in which a new product is taken out of its packaging could immediately buy it themselves.

Control at producers

A YouTube spokesperson confirmed to Bloomberg current testing of e-commerce features with a limited number of video channels. Producers would have control over which products appear in their content. YouTube should thus become a large e-commerce platform where users can buy everything they see, he said.

In addition to the possibility of shopping directly on YouTube, the company also plans to cooperate with the e-commerce app "Shopify". The application is to be connected to the platform. Producers will thus be able to offer products in an image carousel below their videos, creating another opportunity for users to make purchases.

Google focuses on e-commerce

Google wants to focus more on e-commerce. So far, the tech giant has tended to advertise for other providers, but in the Corona crisis, marketing budgets have become much tighter, while online commerce is flourishing. YouTube is set to become the flagship for Google's e-commerce offering and take on Amazon and the like. (pte)
