Sony and E Ink establish e-paper subsidiary

E Ink and Sony have announced a joint venture. It is intended to bundle the e-paper expertise of both companies.

A new joint venture is set to shake up the market for e-paper technology. Behind it are the e-paper specialist E Ink and Sony Semiconductor Solutions - a wholly owned subsidiary of Sony.

The joint venture is expected to combine E Ink's expertise in manufacturing and development with Sony's expertise in product design and marketing. This write according to Netzwoche the two companies in a joint statement.

E Ink and Sony retain 70 percent of shares

The as yet unnamed company will produce new e-paper products and systems. What this actually means is not clear from the press release. An inquiry with the manufacturer has not yet been answered.

The headquarters of the new company will be in Taiwan, according to the companies. As soon as the competition authorities give their approval, the joint venture is to start operations. The paid-in capital is 420 million Taiwan dollars - just under 14 million Swiss francs, it said. Sony Semiconductor Solutions and E Ink together own 70 percent of the shares. (NetWeek)
